Chimney sweeping in Newburgh

The City of Newburgh is the largest place in our service area and one of the oldest. Census estimates put about half of the city's housing units as built before 1940. Only around three in ten are detached houses, and more than four in ten are in two- to four-unit buildings.

The surrounding Town of Newburgh is a separate municipality with a different stock. Homes there are mostly detached, the median one was built in the late 1970s, and fuel oil is the most common heating fuel.

Several flues in one stack

In a brick row house or a multi-family building, a single chimney stack can carry three or four flues. Some serve a boiler or water heater. Some are open to a fireplace. Some were abandoned decades ago.

They cannot be swept or judged as one unit. Each flue is cleaned and scanned on its own. A breach between two flues in the same stack is a path for carbon monoxide from one apartment to another, and it can only be found from inside the flue.

Older buildings also get converted and re-heated. Flues are capped, tapped into for a new appliance or shortened during roof work. It is common for the current heating appliance to vent into a flue built for something else.

The East End Historic District

Much of the city's East End is a National Register historic district of late-nineteenth-century brick townhouses. Exterior changes to a property in a city historic or design district need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Architectural Review Commission.

The district's design guidelines also speak to repointing. Replacement mortar is to match the original in colour, strength, joint profile and texture, using a lime-based mix. That is sound practice on any old chimney. Hard modern mortar pushes stress into soft historic brick. See chimney masonry repair for how that choice is made.

For a wood stove or other solid-fuel appliance, the city has its own permit application. Contact the Department of Code Compliance before installing one.

Booking a chimney sweep in Newburgh

Newburgh is a short run north of Cornwall. If you are in a multi-family or converted building, say so when you call. The number of flues changes what the visit involves.
