Chimney sweeping in Blooming Grove
The Town of Blooming Grove is a large Orange County town west of Cornwall. Schunemunk Mountain rises on its eastern side, and the Moodna valley runs through it along Route 94.
Census estimates for the whole town, villages included, show about three quarters of homes detached and built across many decades. Fuel oil is the most common heat, in about four in ten homes. Propane heats about one in eight, a higher share than in the river towns.

Away from the gas main
Oil and propane are what a house uses when there is no gas main on the road. Both need a flue, and they treat it differently.
Oil leaves soot that should be swept every year. Propane leaves almost none, but a modern propane furnace or boiler runs cool, and its exhaust condenses in a flue that is too large or too cold. Many propane appliances were installed as replacements for oil, into a flue sized for the old burner.
Homes off the gas main are also the ones most likely to add a wood stove for backup heat. A stove used every day builds creosote faster than any fireplace.
Stoves and the town permit
The town code requires a building permit to install a solid-fuel appliance, chimney or flue in a dwelling. The building department lists fireplaces, stoves and outdoor furnaces among its permit types.
If a stove was fitted by a previous owner, it is worth confirming how it was connected. A stove pipe pushed into an old fireplace flue without a liner is a common shortcut. It leaves a small appliance venting into a large cold flue, which is the setup that produces the most creosote.
