Five things that turn a guess into an answer

Whether you call or email, these are the things that let us give you a useful answer rather than a guess.

• Your townIt affects scheduling, particularly across the river.
• What the chimney servesOpen fireplace, wood stove, furnace, boiler, water heater, or more than one.
• What you are seeingStaining, crumbling mortar, a damp patch, smoke coming back into the room, debris in the firebox, or nothing in particular.
• When it happens, if it is a leakEvery rainfall, only in driven rain, or only in winter. This narrows the cause considerably.
• Whether anything has changedA new furnace, a fuel conversion, a stove installed into a fireplace, recent roof work, or a house purchase in progress.
