Chimney sweeping in Cornwall-on-Hudson
The Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson is the incorporated village inside the Town of Cornwall, on the west bank of the Hudson below Storm King Mountain. It has its own building department and its own code, separate from the town's.
Census estimates put close to half of the village's homes as built before 1940. About three quarters are detached single-family houses. That is an old housing stock, and most of those houses still have the masonry chimney they were built with.

Old chimneys, gas appliances
Around seven in ten village homes heat with utility gas, according to the same Census estimates. Put that next to the age of the houses and a pattern follows. A lot of chimneys here were built for coal or wood and now carry the exhaust of a gas furnace, boiler or water heater.
Gas burns clean, so there is little soot to sweep. The risk is different. Gas exhaust is cool and wet. In a large, old, unlined flue it condenses before it reaches the top, and that moisture works on the mortar from the inside. Debris from the flue walls then falls and collects at the base, where it can block the appliance connection.
So a sweep on a gas-heated house here is mostly about clearing that debris and looking at what the flue is doing. If the flue is too large for the appliance, the answer is usually a correctly sized liner.
Fireplaces, stoves and the village permit
Houses of this age often have one or more open fireplaces as well. A fireplace that is used through the winter builds creosote, and that is the classic reason for a sweep.
If you plan to add a wood stove or a fireplace insert, the village code has its own chapter on heating stoves and fireplaces. It asks for a plan, a permit to install, inspections and a permit to use. The building code also lists a chimney or flue installation as work that needs a building permit. Ask the village building department before the work starts.
