Chimney sweeping in Highland Falls
The Village of Highland Falls is in the Town of Highlands, Orange County, just south of the West Point gates.
Census estimates show two main groups of houses. Close to half were built before 1940, and about a quarter in the 1950s. Roughly six in ten are detached.

Three fuels on one street
Heating here is unusually mixed. The estimates show utility gas in about four in ten homes, fuel oil in about a quarter and electricity in about a fifth. Neighbouring houses can have completely different things going up the chimney.
That is why the first question on a sweep is what the flue vents.
- Oil. Fine acidic soot. Swept yearly, usually with the burner service.
- Gas. Little soot, but wet exhaust. The flue is cleared of fallen debris and checked for moisture damage.
- Electric heat. The chimney may serve only a fireplace, or nothing at all. An unused flue still needs a cap and a sound crown to keep water out.
Pre-war and 1950s chimneys age differently
A pre-1940 chimney is often unlined or lined with early clay tile, built in soft brick and lime mortar. A 1950s chimney usually has a clay tile liner from new. By now those tiles are about seventy years old, and cracked tiles and open joints are common at that age.
Either way, sweeping first and scanning second is how the condition gets seen. The village requires a building permit to install a solid-fuel appliance, chimney or flue, so check with the building department before adding a stove or liner.
